PhotoVolt™ Cell
GreenField has taken a novel approach to significantly reducing the cost of solar power. The PhotoVolt™ cell is a rugged, low cost, high voltage and low series resistance silicon solar cell with vertical junctions and contacts providing near-optimum current collection without sheet resistance, current crowding, or blockage of illumination. Being designed for high-intensity operation, it inherently uses a greatly reduced amount of semiconductor material as compared with flat-panel cells. This innovative cell is designed for efficient operation at high intensities (hundreds of suns and higher), a unique feature compared to other solar cells. The PhotoVolt™ cell is more robust and less expensive to produce and implement in a high intensity concentrator system than other types of exotic cells designed for high intensity operation. Being fabricated from silicon, these cells leverage the most widely used semiconductor material, and avoid environmental concerns and degradation issues associated with some of the other cell technologies.
The key PhotoVolt™ cell advantages can be summarized as follows:
High performance at High intensities
High intensity flash testing was conducted at NASA Glenn Research Center on a 40-junction VMJ Cell with an area of 0.78 cm2 over the range of 100 to 2500 suns. The I-V data showed efficiency peaks at about 1200 suns intensity (about 100 watts/cm2 input). Such performance validates the unique low series resistance characteristics of VMJ Cells at high intensities.
Edge-illumination
eliminates front and back contacts and sheet resistivity components of the series resistance, providing improved spectral response for both long and short wavelengths and allows the use of sunlight incident at off-normal angles.
High voltage
high voltage, low current operation is optimum for most applications and provides high tolerance to series resistance within the electrical system, reducing overall cost. It gives very high reversed-voltage breakdown immunity exceeding several thousand volts to reduce the need for by-pass diode protection. Because of its structure, the cell is only sensitive to non-uniformity of illumination in the series direction, which simplifies optical system design demands.
Structural design
provides an extremely rugged configuration electrically, mechanically and thermally. It permits high packing densities with easy interconnecting of electrical output leads in high power density systems. Electrical output leads are located at the sides, easing mounting complexity.
Suitable for high-volume production
The PhotoVolt™ cell’s design simplicity and use of silicon materials lends itself to high volume production at low cost. No other cell can match the highly scalable cell production characteristics of this unique device.
